We already had two of the older 12 led units and found them quite valuable during our latest outage last October. That is why we ordered five of these 20 led units. Three were for some of our grandchildren to take to there dorm rooms at college. The other two were for us. The Units use 4 D cell batteries which adds a bit to the weight, but they are very stable setting on any flat surface and the batteries last a rather long time. We have one in our bedroom and turn it on at the lowest level each nite. Sometimes we forget to turn it off in the morning. So far, the first set of batteries has lasted over two months and still going strong.On a different note. They also provide a bit of nostalgia. They remind me of the old oil lamps my uncle used on his farm when I was a boy. I bought this in a retail store when it was on sale, and am pleased with it. The amount of light is good, though no specifications (lumens) are provided.I also own a Coleman 4D XPS Classic Personal Size LED Lantern, which is a similar product, and some comparisons are worthwhile: The Emerson's batteries are easier to remove. The contact for the negative end of the battery is a spring. Pushing the battery toward this spring lets it come out without much difficulty. The top of the battery compartment of the Coleman is a nightmare to open. I have to use other tools or the corner of a counter to get enough leverage to get the top off. The Emerson has a variable dimmer switch, where the Coleman has two positions only (though those 2 positions are perfectly adequate for me). Either approach seems to work. One big advantage of the Emerson for me is that it can make contact (though fussy) with eneloop rechargeable battery D size adapters, unlike the Coleman lantern... Read more |
