The OR Alpine bivy represents the mid-tier design in OR's line of hooped bivy bags - a notch above the less expensive Highland bivy and a notch below the pricier Advanced bivy. As I understand it, the main difference between the Highland and Alpine bivies (besides the price) is the composition of the waterproof/breathable membrane and the color (grey Pertex for the Highland, blue or orange GoreTex for the Alpine). If you watch the videos on OR's website, they also imply that the "lighter" material of the Highland model makes it better suited for warm and/or humid weather while the Alpine (surprise!) is better for mountaineering and colder climates. On paper, both models ostensibly weigh in at approximately two pounds (measured my Alpine at 1.8 lbs), so "lighter" is apparently more a matter of insulation value than mass. At the cost of another half pound and a 50% price premium, the Advanced bivy mainly adds a second pole/hoop, a footbox vent, and the ability to hitch the entry... Read more |
